The colors on this page came from Sheryl’s hometown.

Sheryl is from Lucban, a town in Quezon province in the Philippines. Once a year Lucban holds the Pahiyas Festival, and the town hangs its houses with kiping — leaf-shaped wafers pressed from rice and dyed hot pink, yellow, and green — until a street of ordinary houses is something else entirely.

That is where the magenta, the rice-paper yellow, and the banana-leaf green on this page come from. It is a kiping palette, borrowed from her hometown and carried to Tennessee.

The food came with her too.
