Where lumpia comes from

Lumpia arrived in the Philippines with Chinese traders — the name comes from Hokkien, and versions of the same rolled, wrapped idea turn up across Southeast Asia. Filipino kitchens took it in so completely that most people who grew up eating it would not think to call it borrowed.

The fried, finger-length kind is party food in the plainest sense: something made in quantity, stacked on a tray, eaten standing up with your hands and a small dish of sauce. If there is a birthday, a graduation, or a table of people who have not seen each other in a while, there is usually lumpia on it.
